A natural disaster is a natural process or phenomenon that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.”

In Canada, whether it’s severe storms, wildfires or snow storms, these unpredictable natural disasters occur frequently and could quickly become a real threat in our daily life. They might cause serious traffic collisions, power outrages, serious injuries, shortages of food and fuel, unavailable banking services, flooded houses, disruption of utilities for hours or days, cancel school transport, and possibly cause the authorities to issue an evacuation order.

The preparedness to face natural disaster emergencies is a responsibility and a challenge for us all. Individuals and families should be prepared to take care of themselves for at least two weeks.

Know the risks you face in your area and make a strong plan to mitigate these risks.
Breaking down preparedness  into steps will help give you a better understanding of natural disaster management and to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies.
Your emergency plan should be flexible enough to cover the most common situations.
